I started playing the electric guitar in 1983 (at age 16) by means of a very cheap single pickup model (of the 'Maya' brand), learning everything by myself (without any theoretical background). Because that guitar was hardly playable, I switched to a 'Flying V' model shortly thereafter (unfortunately, I don't remember its brand). I continued to use this guitar while playing in a couple of heavy rock bands, with some live performances in 1985 (performing cover songs plus original material). After that period, I bought a Metallic Blue Ibanez RG360, which I improved by means of EMG pickups and tone knob removal. I used this guitar mainly for jamming with Johan Jacobs (who is another guitar player), a.o. resulting in an improvised free podium performance in 1992, featuring our infamous 'The Jacoo Blues' song.
Although I sold most of my gear (Marshall amp, integrated guitar effects processor, drum computer, 4-track recorder, etc.), my guitar isn't going anywhere. Sometimes, I still play/improvise for a couple of minutes, just for fun. In fact, when being on my own, I've always liked playing unplugged more than playing through an amp.
A couple of years ago, I additionally had an original Floyd Rose tremolo system installed on my guitar. Also, I purchased a cute little Laney Mini Stereo Amp (Ironheart Edition), any additional guitar sound styles obtainable via e.g. the free Tonebridge app on connected mobile phone.
I have contemplated the idea of commencing a more serious study of the instrument (and music in general), but that's currently not an option. However, my oldest son is going to music school and following (classical) guitar lessons, so it was easily decided to help him out on his practice sessions at home (by analyzing, annotating, and playing the tunes as examples to him) the first couple of years. I recently purchased the Vaideology study book, but I currently don't have a clue when I'll finally be able to make this a priority.
